Q&A with Dr. Caplan

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is my favorite because it teaches healthy social and emotional development, and it also brings back fond memories of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood from my own childhood.

What is your favorite children's book?

I was a big reader as a child and have always loved children’s books. In college, I even worked at a children’s bookstore! My favorite series is one that not many people know: The Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce. It follows a girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to become a knight in a magical fantasy kingdom.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

My stuffed animals were always my favorites. I loved to make up stories with them.

Who is your greatest inspiration?

Ruth Bader Ginsberg, because she blazed paths in her field, and spent her life fighting for the rights of women. "Women belong in all places where decisions are being made."

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy knitting, which is one of my favorite ways to relax and unwind. I also love traveling the world with my family and experiencing the foods and cultures of different places. My husband and I enjoy birdwatching and hiking together as a way to connect with nature.

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

My favorite part of pediatrics is being a part of a family's growth. From assisting new families with breastfeeding and just getting to know their new babies, to supporting development and growing independence during the early school years and adolescence, to finally saying goodbye as they head off to college and beyond!

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

While I enjoy all parts of childhood development, my personal specialty is breastfeeding and lactation medicine. As one of the first board-certified medical specialists in this field, I provide one-on-one consultations with new families to help them reach their goals.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

Our office is equipped to see patients with all medical needs.
