Q&A with Dr. Smith

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

Beauty and the Beast

What is your favorite children's book and why?

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? is my favorite childhood book. I remember it from my own childhood as well as both my daughters loved it.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

I loved puzzles and games, still do!

Who is your greatest inspiration and why?

My husband is my greatest inspiration. He isn't afraid to go after his dreams. He is kind and thoughtful, looks out for others. He is an amazing father.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I love spending time with my family, eating my husband's cooking, reading and sleeping!

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

I chose pediatrics because children are the foundation of our future, and I want to help them develop healthy habits early in life. By supporting children, I also have the opportunity to positively influence parents, who are often inspired to make lifestyle changes for the benefit of their family.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

What sets me apart is the way I approach patient care as if I were caring for a member of my own family. Having supported loved ones through medical challenges, I understand firsthand the importance of compassion, patience, and clear communication. Those personal experiences taught me that families want more than just treatment—they want someone who listens, respects their concerns, and makes them feel included in the process.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

To accommodate children with special needs, I tailor each encounter to reduce anxiety and build trust. For example, I adapt physical exams to be less intimidating by using a step-by-step, gentle approach and incorporating familiar objects or play when possible. I also coordinate closely with specialists, therapists, and educators to ensure comprehensive, individualized care. Just as importantly, I involve and support families throughout the process, recognizing that their insight and partnership are essential to helping the child thrive.
