Q&A with Samantha
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
Moana
What is your favorite children's book and why?
My daughter is currently 18 months old and my favorite children's book has changed frequently based on her interests! Right now, we are loving "Stellaluna" by Janell Cannon.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
my American Girl doll (Samantha doll) because she had my same name!
Who is your greatest inspiration and why?
Growing up in Tucson, I was deeply inspired by Gabby Giffords. We attended the same high school, and she started her career in Congress while I was still in school. Since her assassination attempt, I've admired her resilience in the face of hardship, her courage in her recovery, and her ongoing advocacy. I strive to bring her qualities of determination and compassion into my own work in pediatrics.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
Traveling, hiking, reading, spending time with my daughter, husband, and dog
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
I became a nurse practitioner because at the end of my grandfather's life, I saw first-hand the way compassionate care can change the course of a family's experience in the healthcare system. I chose pediatrics because children are at the very beginning of their journey, and helping families set a foundation for lifelong health is one of the most meaningful ways that I can contribute.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
In my practice, I combine empathy with evidence-based medicine. With kids, I like to keep visits engaging so they feel involved and comfortable. With parents, I know the real work often lies in guidance and reassurance, so I focus on explaining things clearly and giving families the knowledge and confidence to support their child's health and development via joint shared decision making. Above all, I want families to know they have a partner in me - someone who will advocate for their child throughout the lifespan.
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
Our office is welcoming to individuals with special needs.
