Q&A with Dr. Szymaszek-Cusick
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
My favorite animated movie is Moana. The movie has a dynamic plot, vibrant colors of the ocean and islands, and great music. I enjoy watching this movie with my kids and find that story relaxing and funny.
What is your favorite children's book and why?
My favorite children's book is "Harold and the Purple Crayon". It shows that thanks to the power of imagination and creativity, you can change reality and find solutions to difficult situations. I think that is has a very positive message.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
One of my favorite childhood toys was a microscope. I remembered having one as a child and it open to me a completely new microscopic world and it sparked my curiosity in how the things are built.
Who is your greatest inspiration and why?
I had an extraordinary teacher during my residency. He was very knowledgeable, patient, personable and positive. He was able to explain complex medical cases in an informative way and always had time to address any concerns.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
Outside of work, I love to spend time close to nature and enjoy walks and adventures to zoos and aquariums with my family. I also like to cook and try new recipes.
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
My mother who is a microbiologist introduced me to an intricate world of microorganisms and my father, and my uncle were physicians. My background led me to my choice of pursuing a medical career, and I decided to help children to live healthy lifestyles, and help them to get better when sick, so the disease won't stop the pursue of their dreams.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
I'm passionate about developing strong relationships with the children and their families. I take time to listen to the needs and concerns, to answer the questions, and to create together a treatment plan which is the best for the patients and their families. I'm also a mother, which brings a unique level of compassion and understanding to my work.
