Q&A with Dr. Gerlach

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

Inside Out because it highlights the emotional world of children and the value of helping them understand and express their feelings.

What is your favorite children's book and why?

"The Tale of Despereaux" was the first chapter book that I read aloud to my boys. I love it because it shows us that even the smallest voices can make the biggest difference.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

My favorite childhood toys were my art supplies. Creating always helped me express myself, and now as a pediatrician, I see how important creativity is for helping kids feel safe and be themselves.

Who is your greatest inspiration and why?

My greatest inspiration is my own family. Raising my children has given me a firsthand understanding of the joys, challenges, and responsibilities that families face every day. Their curiosity, resilience, and capacity for love inspire me to be the kind of pediatrician who listens deeply, supports fully, and tries to help every child and family thrive.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Outside of work, I focus on wellness and family. I spend time with my two boys and shuttle them back and forth to various activities and cheer for them at their sporting events. I enjoy spending time at the beach, collecting shells and rocks with my kids, hiking, and taking walks with my two mini-goldendoodles, Archie and Lucy.

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

My path to pediatrics was inspired by a lifelong passion for working with children, from teaching and caregiving roles in my early years to raising my own family. Pediatrics allows me to combine my love for children with my commitment to supporting families throughout every stage of development. I am inspired daily about the privilege of watching children grow, building strong connections with families, and serving as a trusted partner in their care. My goal is to provide the same compassion, guidance, and dedication that I would want for my own children.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

What sets me apart as a pediatrician is my ability to connect with both children and their families. I take time to listen, explain things clearly, and make every child feel comfortable, while guiding parents with practical, supportive care. I focus on open communication, honesty, and guidance that is practical and supportive. My goal is to make parents feel heard and confident in the care their child receives.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

I strive to serve as the central hub for patients with special needs, coordinating care and maintaining clear communication with multiple specialists. I see my role as helping families navigate complex medical systems, ensuring that every provider is on the same page. This collaborative approach allows me to build trust with both patients and families while advocating for the best possible outcomes.
