Q&A with Dr. Esquivel

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

My favorite animated movie is probably Toy Story—I love the older Disney classics, but I also really enjoy watching newer ones like The Super Mario Bros. Movie or Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with my son

What is your favorite children's book and why?

We read so many books at home that it’s hard to pick just one, but The Gruffalo stands out—my son and I love how the little mouse uses his wit and creativity to outsmart the Gruffalo

What was your favorite childhood toy?

I loved LEGOs as a kid and now enjoy building with my son because it allows us to be creative and solve problems together, which reminds me how important play is for learning and development as a pediatrician.

Who is your greatest inspiration and why?

My greatest inspiration is my mother. She raised our family with incredible strength and determination, always encouraging us to be ambitious and pursue our goals. She is an amazing mother and grandmother, and her example continues to guide me.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I enjoy cooking, hiking, running with my dog, and spending time with my husband and young son.

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

I was inspired to work in pediatrics through my early experiences in public health, where I focused on programs that supported children and families. During training, I found joy in caring for kids and forming strong connections with families, and I knew pediatrics was the right path for me.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

I strive to build strong, trusting relationships with families through open communication, empathy, and shared decision making. My background in public health gives me a strong foundation in preventive care, and as a native Spanish speaker I am able to connect with families in their preferred language. I focus on providing compassionate, culturally sensitive care that empowers parents while supporting children’s growth and development.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

Our clinic serves a large population of children with special healthcare needs. We provide evidence-based preventive care and screenings for children with a variety of genetic syndromes and complex conditions. To best support families, we accommodate their needs by allowing ample appointment time to thoroughly address medical concerns and coordinate care.
