Q&A with Dr. Nagorka
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
"Toy Story" is my favorite animated movie. It took me back to my childhood, not only the toys, but the personalities of the human characters. The characters of the toys, of course, mimic people of the real world, which was funny.
What is your favorite children's book and why?
"Green Eggs and Ham" was my favorite. I had it memorized by 3 1/2 years old (I could "read" it by myself). Then my little sister scribbled on every page! My mom bought another copy for me. Bless her heart!
What was your favorite childhood toy?
I liked both Legos and Hot Wheels/Match Box. Actually, I made ramps from Legos for the hot wheels tracks!
Who is your greatest inspiration and why?
My wife is my greatest inspiration. She had a rough upbringing, had kids quite young, took great care of them while having impressive jobs (for having a high school education/no chance to go to college), marrying me and making a much better person. No one else comes close.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
Photography is my main hobby, but I enjoy travelling, visiting family, working out/hiking and I love music! (older rock and roll, New Wave).
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
I first knew Pediatrics was for me when my little brother was born, 7 1/2 years after me. It was so much fun seeing, being with, playing with him, it brought me joy! Over the years there were other interests, which were fleeting. It always came back to Pediatrics ( I could have gone into Orthopedics.......seeing kids for more that injuries/orthopedic issues won out easily).
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
It brings me joy being a Pediatrician. I enjoy talking to/with the kids/teens/young adults and try to be very clear when explaining to them/their parents all aspects of the visit (sick or well). I do so in an understandable fashion, using examples very frequently. I always want the patients/parents/caretakers to feel good about the visit when they leave!
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
Our practice has been taking care of special health care patients for decades! We know what the patients need, helps arrange their equipment/supplies, have wheelchair scales, and, most importantly, we know, get to know our patients with great depth and caring. The practice has been seeing some of our patients for almost 40 years! I've been seeing some since I started 26 years ago. We KNOW them!
