Q&A with Dr. Payne
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
My favorite animated movie is The Incredibles. I remember watching it on repeat during family road trips in middle school. I played the main theme for a children's show with my high school band.
What is your favorite children's book and why?
Controversial to call it simply for children, but the Harry Potter series is easily my favorite book series, having now read the series 3 times. Its nice that it spans quite an age range through the series. After all, I was part of the generation that grew up with the books.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
My favorite 'toys' growing up were my assortment of sports equipment. Sports were always a huge part of my childhood and certainly influence my practice today. I encourage all of my patients and families to get involved in organized athletics from young ages.
Who is your greatest inspiration and why?
My childhood sports hero, Ken Griffey Jr., highlighted the idea that we can be honing our craft at the absolute highest level while not taking ourselves too seriously and staying relaxed. Unfortunately, I've yet to start wearing backwards ballcaps in the office.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I enjoy travel with family and playing lots of golf (and disc golf). Things are the best when I'm able to mix the two.
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
During my medical education, I found my pediatrics rotations to provide, by far, the most rewarding experiences. Everything from routine well checks, to acute illness management to educating families is very gratifying.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
I try to listen to families and meet them where they are, while also doing my best to educate on current evidence-based medicine and best practices. It is important to me that families don't just know what I recommend, but the reasoning behind it.
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
Residency training at a Children's Hospital provided plenty of opportunity and experience with children of all levels of need, including children with special needs.
