Q&A with Dr. Holmgren

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

As a child I loved "The Lion King." One of my favorite animated movies/series now is "How to Train Your Dragon."

What is your favorite children's book?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I loved all of the colors and items he ate through. I loved flipping the pages and seeing all of the different colors and designs. I also loved watching him grow and turn into a beautiful butterfly.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

I can't remember a specific favorite childhood toy but I could always be found riding my bike, skating, playing with my "skip-it", walking on stilts, or building a fort. I also loved board games like "Clue" or "Sorry."

Who is your greatest inspiration?

I don't have one specific person who inspires me but a multitude of people who have influenced me on my journey. My parents, husband, children, sister, extended family, friends and co-workers have all left marks - both big and small - on my life, influencing my journey in life. They support me, encourage me, and remind me that I am enough, but I can also be better. I appreciate their strength, compassion and influence in all areas of my life.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I love gardening, especially growing my own fruits and veggies—it’s so much tastier and has great health benefits. I’m always reading a book whenever I get a free moment. Camping with my family is a favorite, and we’re working on visiting all the states in the US. I’m also enjoy photography, always snapping pictures to capture the perfect moment. And of course, I’m a huge chocolate fan—milk or dark, I can’t resist!

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

I've always wanted to be a pediatrician because I love helping kids. After facing my own health scare as a child, I became determined to make sure no child goes through what I did. I’m especially passionate about supporting children with special needs, having personal experience with it in my family. I enjoy helping families navigate their rights and options for services, and I believe every child, no matter their challenges, deserves care filled with love, respect, and kindness.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

I enjoy working with children with special needs and have specialized training in Autism from Phoenix Children's Hospital. This, along with my family experience, allows me to support families with children who have a range of special needs. I also completed breastfeeding training during residency to assist new mothers with breastfeeding challenges at any stage.
I believe in a team approach to medicine, where I'm a champion for the child and parents are actively involved in their treatment plan. I like to give families options and educate them on their child's diagnosis so they can understand the reasons behind symptoms.
I’m passionate about preventative health—encouraging healthy diets, exercise, family time, safety, and immunizations. I believe preventing illness is a key part of what pediatricians do.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

I have specialized training in treating children with Autism and developmental delays and am experienced in navigating various systems, including therapies, IEPs, and support services.
Our office is designed to be accessible and sensory-friendly, with quiet spaces and designated times to accommodate children with sensory sensitivities. I focus on meeting each child where they are to ensure their comfort during visits.
My areas of focus include breastfeeding support, Autism, developmental milestones and delays, and preventative health.
